随着资源的逐步枯竭，以及美国近邻这只能源黑洞的巨大抽吸作用，加拿大天然气的价格五年来翻了两番。五年多以前，多伦多地区的家庭取暖和热水用气价格仅
0.09元/立方米；去年冬天，该地区天然气的价格暴涨到0.42元/立方米。以有限的资源供应目前的市场需求量，天然气的价格还将继续增长，专家估计很快就会超出0.60元/立方米。同时，毫无节制地燃烧化石燃料，还造成环境污染日益加重，使我们的生存条件逐步恶化。

面对如此众多的问题，我们该怎么办？答案很简单，就在我们的头顶。我们可以利用太阳能这一永不枯竭的绿色能源来部分替代我们家庭目前所消耗的天然气、油或电等不可再生能源。太阳能应用其实并不是什么新话题。早在20世纪50年代和70年代，当世界出现能源危机的时候，各国都曾青睐过太阳能。然而，当时的能源危机均源于国际政治动乱。

形势恢复和平后，能源价格立刻又跌入谷底。自20世纪90年代以来，世界再次进入能源危机。这次是真正的危机――以石油、天然气和煤炭为代表的传统主流能源正在逐渐枯竭，人们翻遍地球的各个角落，仍无法找到新的储量。物以稀为贵，在资源可供应量越来越少的情况下，其价格必然越来越高。

多伦多地区应用太阳能有得天独厚的气候优势。本地区全年拥有260多个晴天，年平均日照指数2200多小时，与地处热带地区的美国迈阿密相当。安装一台家用型太阳能热水器，全年可以为用户家庭节省1000立方米天然气，按现价计算其价值高达600加元。安装太阳能热水器，即可把热水耗能锁定在免费的太阳能上，一劳永逸地解除能源价格进一步上涨而任人宰割的后顾之忧。

中国在太阳能热能利用方面处于绝对领先的地位。目前中国太阳能热水器的年产量超过300万台，其产品和应用量均占世界份额的70％以上。在中国，太阳能热水器正在逐步取代燃气和电热水器而成为民用热水产品的主流。随着能源价格的上涨和环保意识的抬升，发达国家的太阳能应用也在快速发展。在奥地利、德国、澳大利亚、日本、美国加州、夏威夷等地已随处可见太阳能产品。加拿大作为传统的能源供应和消费大国，一向以能源供应充分和价廉著称。然而，能源价格上升到今天的地步，已驱使人们开始接受替代能源。随着能源价格的进一步攀升，不远的将来在多伦多这样的加拿大城市也会随处可见太阳能产品。

在多伦多地区，以华人、印巴人为代表的新移民家庭在太阳能应用上最为积极活跃。这样的家庭房型大、人口多，许多家庭的房间、地库甚至车库都对外出租，其热水用量大，所以家用型太阳能热水器的订单大多首先落入这样的家庭。另外，增装太阳能热水器后，又能额外增加200公升的热水储量，原来三、四个人连续洗澡就会耗光一箱热水，现在则允许两倍数量的人连续洗澡也没问题。

借助源于中国的技术和价格优势，来自中国大陆的新移民在加拿大的太阳能市场取得了骄人的业绩。由两位中国大陆新移民组建的加拿大高新技术国际公司（Advanced Technology International Inc.）经过数年的研究，成功地推出了拥有自主知识产权、符合加拿大技术、气候和住房标准的太阳能热水器产品。产品自三年前批量推向市场以来，每年都以超过100％的速度成长。今年入春以来，更是出现排长队安装的局面。估计今年仅该公司一家的销量就能为加拿大全国太阳能的应用带来150％的增长。
